From Space to Stream: Combining Remote Sensing and In Situ Techniques for Comprehensive Stream Health Assessment

This study examines the ecological impact of urbanization on the Almyros and Gazanos streams in Heraklion, Greece, using a multi-dimensional assessment approach. By integrating Copernicus satellite imagery, drone surveys, chemical analyses, and geophysical measurements, the research evaluates hydrological changes, water contamination, and biodiversity loss. Findings indicate eutrophication in the Almyros stream, likely due to agricultural runoff, while Gazanos stream exhibits pollution primarily linked to urbanization. The study underscores the need for comprehensive monitoring and advanced methodologies to support effective stream management and policy development for urban water ecosystems.
